Design

A beautiful revolution for the roads

The Design Center was the first of its kind in Korea to independently focus on automotive design.
Today, it leads global trends with designs that harmonize people and their emotions. To predict global design trends and study lifestyles in regional markets, we are building a global design network connecting major cities in the US, Europe, Japan and newly emerging economies.
The Design Center will spearhead even more original and innovative designs to raise our profile as a global leading automaker.

1. Design planning
Data Research and Analysis - Image
Data Research and Analysis
Objective

- Predict future styling trends.
- Research for new & unique aesthetics.

Methodology

- Analyze competitors' models.
- Analyze styling trends through the motor shows and other events.
- Analyze lifestyles (image map production).
- Analyze style positioning maps.

Different units in the Design Research Center work together to predict the future design trends and devise the automobile packaging for future models.
2. Sketching and rendering
Idea Sketch - Image
Idea Sketch
Objective

- Propose preliminary ideas for creating a concrete image of the target car model.

Methodology

- Designers use colored pencils, markers and other tools to draft concrete images of the future shapes they envision.

As the first in the styling process the idea sketch is very important. 80-90% of the design direction will be decided in this stage.

Rendering - Image
Rendering
Objective

- Suggest the concrete design image for 2D design evaluation.

Methodology

- Consider the proportions of the side, front and rear view in order to express the image in sense of realism.

Rendering: Designs are assessed at this stage. Package sketches of the side, front and rear provided by the design engineers are evaluated in technical and legal standpoints to develop the design for use in a real world.

3. 1/4 scale modeling
1/4 scale Modeling - Image
1/4 scale Modeling
Objective

- Embody the 2D design image into the 3D shape.
- The model is used for measuring the air resistance coefficient in a wind tunnel.

1/4-scale Modeling
This is the first step in turning a 2D design draft into a 3D shape.

4. Digital(CAS) modeling
Digital(CAS) modeling - Image
Digital(CAS) modeling
Objective

- The design is recreated through a computer-generated 3D image whose data is then used for assessing design and aerodynamics.

5. Digital visual evaluation(virtual reality presentation)
virtual reality presentation - Image
virtual reality presentation
Virtual reality technology is employed for a visual evaluation (presentation) of various models to determine a concrete direction for development.
6. 1:1 scale clay modeling
1/1 Tape Drawing - Image
1/1 Tape Drawing
Objective

- A design diagram is created to produce the full-scale model. At the same time, the design can be studied in its actual size.

Methodology

- Line tape is used to represent the side, front and rear view of a design diagram in full scale.

Full-scale Rendering
The draft design is enlarged to full-scale size, but most of the details are abbreviated.
Full-scale Tape Drawing
A design diagram is drawn so that a full-scale model can be made. As with the 1/4-scale tape drawing, the sketches are done while simultaneously checking the side, front, rear and top views.

1/1 Modeling - Image
1/1 Modeling
Objective

- A full-scale 3D model is produced for design assessment and engineering inspection.

Methodology

- The 3D (body) model and various trim pieces are crafted out of clay.

Full-scale Modeling
At this stage, a 3D model is created to allow inspection of engineering aspects and to assess the design. A low-deformation resin material is shaped and then painted to give the concept a more realistic image and feel. Detailed mock-ups of the trim pieces are also made and attached to the body to complete the full-scale model.

Color and Seat Design - Image
Color and Seat Design

- Color designs are included in the initial product plan, and the work is carried out at the same time as styling. This involves not only the colors adorning the interior and exterior, but also all the areas related to materials, including embossing and surface treatment.
