Great designs can considerably increase the value of advanced technologies by making them shine. ‘Fluidic Sculpture’ is Hyundai Motor’s design philosophy which aspires to create advanced designs. Fluidic Sculpture’ takes its inspiration from nature and through a unique process turns this inspiration into a great design. The end result embodies nature’s vibrant energy and dynamism. Breaking down the barriers between art and automobile design, ‘Fluidic Sculpture’ has given a unique design identity to Hyundai Motor.

Hyundai Motor introduced ‘Fluidic Sculpture’ to the world in 2009, with the launch of Sonata which received overwhelmingly positive reviews for its unique and stunning look. Hyundai Motor subsequently announced Fluidic Sculpture 2.0’ and has been applying it to its new models since 2013.

Hyundai Motor’s design philosophy goes beyond aesthetics by eliminating the unnecessary and incorporating all of the necessary elements into a great design. Although Hyundai Motor is known for its striking exterior designs, every aspect of the design is carefully thought through, especially the interior design, to ensure great ergonomics which leads to exceptional comfort for drivers and passengers alike.

Clustering and placing buttons in the most convenient locations, fine-tuning the design to a tenth of an inch and using materials that convey a sense of refinement when touched are all parts of Hyundai Motor’s design practice based on Human Machine Interface (HMI) principles. Following the HMI principles, Hyundai Motor is creating interior designs that are simple, intuitive and ergonomic which leads to higher levels of emotional satisfaction.

The main design team at Namyang Technology Research Center is also collaborating with overseas design studios in Europe, the US and Japan, in order to strengthen their competitiveness. Perfecting design with
cutting-edge technology!

A vehicle model is created within a virtual space through auto simulation and 3D digital design. After
models are put through a variety of tests such as simulation analysis and installation evaluation, potential
problems are filtered in advance to optimize the design process and shorten the development period.

DESIGN

  • Body
    structure design

    The body structure acts much like the skeleton of the
    human body, providing the basic framework for driving
    parts like the engine and chassis, as well as various
    convenience features. We consider all the qualities
    required of a car, such as strength, crash resistance,
    aerodynamics, noise, fuel efficiency and space when
    designing a body structure to produce a car that is safe,
    comfortable, fast and economical.

  • Chassis design

    We design chassis systems that relay power to vehicles
    and enable driving. The chassis system comprises the
    suspension, steering, fuel, cooling, exhaust and intake,
    mounting, control and brake systems.

  • Functional design

    The exterior and interior of a vehicle are designed with
    a focus on providing a pleasant, comfortable and safe
    environment for occupants. A new technology called
    adaptive headlamps feature low-beam bulbs that swivel
    left and right in response to the steering wheel so that
    they illuminate the direction where the driver is looking.
    Additionally, the lamps move up and down depending on
    the number of passengers and vehicle yaw.

ANALYSIS

  • Analysis

    Noise, Vibration, Harshness (NVH) analysis To control
    noise and vibrations generated during driving, we analyze
    the causes of vibrations and characteristics of how the
    vibrations are relayed to passengers. This process is
    conducted via computer simulation before an actual car
    is made. Once the initial evaluations have been carried
    out to produce the optimal solution, a prototype car is
    then manufactured.

  • Durability analysis

    A virtual car model is created to obtain quantitative data
    on the load that is transferred from the road surface to
    the suspension and car body while driving. Through this
    process, we carry out detailed modeling and durability
    analysis. The initial durability assessment of the car body
    and key chassis parts allows us to pinpoint possible
    problems and come up with solutions to improve
    performance, as well as to cut costs and weight.
    The information is then reflected in the design process.

  • Crash analysis

    When developing cars, analysis of local crash
    requirements and local regulations is performed and
    research is conducted on new crash regulations, body
    structures, and engineering methods to secure optimal
    crash performance.
