March 21, 2013 – Hyundai Motor Company, the fastest-growing automaker by brand, today unveiled exterior renderings of the ‘HND-9’, its latest luxury sports coupe concept.

The ‘HND-9’ represents an evolution of Hyundai’s fluidic sculpture design philosophy. The ninth concept model developed by Hyundai Motor Group’s R&D Center in Namyang, Korea, the HND-9 features sophisticated details in every design element, reinforcing a premium look.

In particular, the HND-9, with its dramatic long hood and wheelbase, is a modern reinterpretation of the elegant image of a classic premium sports coupe.

Fluidic yet sleek character lines that stretch from headlamp to trunk, voluminous, powerful car body and a striking, wide hexagonal-shaped radiator grille underscore the high performance image of the concept.

Furthermore, butterfly doors, spiral-shaped lines connected to the headlamp, softly glistening silver coating, dual twin muffler and uniquely designed head and rear lamps give the car a sleek futuristic look.

As a rear-wheel drive, high-performance sports coupe concept, HND-9 is equipped with 3.3-liter turbo GDi engine and 8-speed auto transmission, delivering maximum output of 370ps.

The HND-9 is set to make its world debut during Hyundai’s press conference on March 28 at the 2013 Seoul Motor Show. More details of the concept’s design and its cutting-edge technologies will be revealed at the show.

March 13, 2013

The Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell has been selected for the second consecutive year by the European Commission-backed Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH JU) to demonstrate the real-world benefits of hydrogen fuel cell technology. The world’s first production fuel cell electric vehicle, the ix35 Fuel Cell, will be made available throughout 2013 to members of the European Parliament, European Commission officials and other policymakers for test drives in Brussels, Belgium.

Hyundai Motor was awarded its first leasing contract for a hydrogen-powered fuel cell car by the FCH JU in October 2011. Over the course of 2012, the ix35 Fuel Cell was presented to EU decision-makers, stakeholders and the general public at a number of demonstration drives and public events in Brussels and other locations across Europe.

President of Hyundai Motor Europe B.K. Rim said: “We are delighted that the FCH JU has chosen the ix35 Fuel Cell as its European demonstration vehicle and look forward to working with them to promote the benefits of hydrogen and fuel cell technology. We are sure that the leading policymakers and opinion-formers who drive this remarkable vehicle will find its ability to deliver performance and comfort without compromising its eco-friendly nature with tailpipe emissions highly compelling.”

The leader in fuel cell development

Hyundai has become a world-leader in the development of hydrogen fuel cell technology since the introduction of the Santa Fe FCEV in 2000 and operates a dedicated fuel cell research division at its Eco Technology Research Institute in Korea. In January 2013 the company became the world’s first automaker to begin assembly-line production of zero-emission, hydrogen-powered vehicles.

Hyundai plans to build 1,000 examples of the ix35 Fuel Cell by 2015 for lease to public and private fleets, primarily in Europe, where the European Commission has established a road map for construction of a pan-European hydrogen fuelling station network. A total of 17 ix35 Fuel Cell vehicles have already been ordered by the cities of Copenhagen, Denmark and Skåne, Sweden.

Leading automakers, including Hyundai, have declared support for more refueling stations to prepare the market for mass production of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.

The Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell

Using Hyundai’s proprietary technology, the ix35 Fuel Cell’s fuel cell stack converts hydrogen into electricity, which turns the vehicle’s motor. The only emission generated is water.

The ix35 Fuel Cell can be refueled with hydrogen in only a few minutes. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 12.5 seconds, has a top speed of 160 km/h and can travel 594 kilometers on a single tank.

The ix35 Fuel Cell is the result of 14 years and several hundred million euros of research by hundreds of engineers at Hyundai Eco Technology Research Institute in Mabuk, Korea. The car has logged more than 3 million kilometers of road tests in real-world conditions in Europe, Korea and the U.S.

New Grand Santa Fe offers more European customers access to premium SUV
No. 40305-03-20133205 hit
  • European debut for Hyundai’s premium seven-seat SUV, New Grand Santa Fe
  • Model offers greater occupant and cargo capacity than standard model
  • Design form influenced by ‘Storm Edge’, evolution of ‘fluidic sculpture’

Offenbach, 5 March 2013

At the 2013 Salon International de l'Auto, Geneva, Switzerland, Hyundai will give a European premiere to New Grand Santa Fe – its long wheelbase premium E-segment SUV.

Hyundai has brought New Grand Santa Fe to Europe to meet the demand for the long wheelbase version of the popular model, which will contribute to the company capturing a larger share of the E-segment SUV market in Europe.

Tuned for Europe
New Grand Santa Fe was first seen at the 2012 New York International Show and the European variant benefits from several significant adaptations to the US specification, such as adaptive front lighting, lane departure warning and smart parking assist systems.

Furthermore, the ride and handling characteristics have been tweaked specifically for European buyers who demand a more damped, responsive driving experience.

‘Storm Edge’ styling continues
New Grand Santa Fe features Hyundai’s well-received ‘Storm Edge’ form language – first introduced on New Generation Santa Fe. The new styling is based on Hyundai’s ‘fluidic sculpture’.

‘Storm Edge’ captures the strong and dynamic images created by nature during the formation of a storm.

New Grand Santa Fe was developed alongside its standard counterpart from the earliest stages, enabling designers to fashion a coherent form that bears a strong family resemblance.

Despite this, there are clear differences between the two. At the front of New Grand Santa Fe, a re-shaped front grille sits above restyled fog lamps and a more pronounced bumper. In profile, the rear doors are noticeably longer to accommodate the third row of seats. A new, longer roof panel accentuates the car’s load-carrying capabilities. As a result, the rear quarter glass now follows the contours of the C-pillars more closely.

The overall height, width and length of New Grand Santa Fe have been extended (+10, +5 and +225 mm respectively) due to the enlarged wheelbase (+100 mm), while still retaining New Generation Santa Fe’s dynamic yet sophisticated style.

Further differentiation is provided by striking new 18- and 19-inch alloy wheels, while re-styled LED lamp clusters frame the swaged beltline. At the rear, separate exhaust pipes, rather than the twin unit on the regular model, finish the aesthetic upgrades.

Increased capacities
Thanks to its increased wheelbase, the new Hyundai New Grand Santa Fe offers more second and third row roominess compared to the standard model, allowing up to seven occupants to travel in greater comfort.

Head and legroom is improved for both second- and third-row passengers. Second-row occupants receive 10 mm more headroom and 50 mm increased legroom, while the third row offers head and legroom increases of 33 and 35 mm respectively.

Cargo capacity, when the third-row seats are folded flat, has increased to a best-in-class 634 litres. A 3-litre under-floor luggage box, located between the wheel arches, offers additional storage to the spacious 631-litre cargo trunk capacity – in total a 49-litre increase over New Generation Santa Fe.

Considered powerplant
New Grand Santa Fe will be available to European buyers with a single, carefully-selected powertrain. A powerful Euro5-compliant, 2,2-litre ‘R’ VGT diesel engine, producing 197 ps, is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. European buyers will also benefit from Hyundai’s Active ECO system, enabling drivers to maximise the vehicle’s eco performance – New Grand Santa Fe will emit 192 g/km of CO₂ (combined).

Cabin refinement and flexibility
Hyundai’s three-mode steering system, FLEX STEER, is standard on New Grand Santa Fe. The selected mode – normal, sport and comfort – is displayed on the enlarged 4,3 inch TFT LCD Supervision Cluster.

New Grand Santa Fe also benefits from a single, vehicle-length panoramic sunroof with no centre beam, allowing natural light to flood the cabin. If, however, rear passengers would like to reduce natural light levels, internal curtains can be erected manually from within the door.

Available in six- or seven-seat combinations, New Grand Santa Fe offers ultimate flexibility whether carrying occupants or luggage. The New Grand Santa Fe’s seven-seat configuration is split 2:3:2, while the six-seat variant is split 2:2:2. The second row of seats can independently slide and recline, while third-row seats fold flat.

A powered tailgate yields a wide opening to the cargo space, allowing maximum convenience when packing items into the trunk.

Allan Rushforth, Senior Vice President and COO at Hyundai Motor Europe, commented, “New Grand Santa Fe retains all of New Generation Santa Fe’s key strengths – eye-catching design, great comfort, efficiency and quality – while offering improved roominess. We firmly believe that New Grand Santa Fe is a compelling purchase proposition and will continue to attract new customers to Hyundai from the perceived ‘premium’ brands.”

The New Grand Santa Fe will be manufactured from April 2013 at Hyundai’s number 4 plant in Ulsan, Korea.

Hyundai Unveils Upgraded i20 WRC at Geneva
No. 40205-03-20131996 hit
  • New specification Hyundai i20 WRC launched at Geneva marks another important step in team development schedule
  • Latest spec includes upgrades to aerodynamics, chassis and suspension to improve cooling, enhance suspension kinematics and chassis stiffness
  • Development of Alzenau facility is proceeding rapidly and to plan with focus on key staff recruitment
  • Private testing of i20 will begin later in the year at various locations in Europe

Geneva, 5 March 2013

Hyundai Motorsport GmbH has taken another significant step towards its forthcoming participation in the FIA World Rally Championship with the unveiling of its latest specification i20 WRC car at the Geneva Motor Show today.

Hyundai is gearing up for its debut season in the challenging FIA World Rally Championship in 2014 with a year of private testing and development as it progresses towards a competition-ready WRC-specification of its i20 model. A first iteration of the car made its debut at the Paris Motor Show back in September but this latest model incorporates notable updates to the exterior bodywork and suspension. The upgrades are the result of collaborative work between Hyundai’s R&D facility in Namyang, Korea and the newly formed Hyundai Motorsport GmbH in Alzenau, Germany, headed up by veteran WRC man Michel Nandan.

The new specification Hyundai i20 WRC also reveals a striking look thanks to a redesigned livery which blends a dynamic treatment of Hyundai’s corporate blue together with an innovative use of characters from the native Korean script, Hunminjeongeum. The livery matches the excitement and dynamism of WRC with the Korean heritage of the Hyundai brand.

In the two months since his appointment, Team Principal Michel Nandan has focused on establishing the core Hyundai WRC team at the bespoke facility in Alzenau with key technical, logistics and motorsport specialists joining the new manufacturer team. The team will soon be embarking on a more intensive test programme with the i20 WRC to ramp up development of the car ahead of its maiden season.

Hyundai Motorsport Team Principal, Michel Nandan commented: “We are still in the infancy of our exciting WRC programme so the development curve for the car and team is steep. This latest version of the i20 WRC have centred on aerodynamics with the objective of improving the car’s cooling systems. A new rear wing and front spoiler give the i20 WRC a new external appearance while, under the bodywork, improvements have also been made to the suspension kinematics and chassis stiffness as we gear up for a more structured test programme later in the year. We have lots of important foundations to lay both with the car and the team at Alzenau.

“Building up a new motorsport facility from scratch is an ambitious and rewarding challenge. We have begun the recruitment process but already have a number of key people in place who bring with them a wealth of rally and motorsport experience. We are rapidly building up the team infrastructure and are pleased that everything is running to schedule.

“Hyundai has returned to the World Rally stage to demonstrate its technical capabilities on one of the world’s most competitive stages. Our ultimate goal is to be victorious but we know that we have a lot of tough competition ahead of us. We will use this year to lay the solid foundations but hope to advance quickly as 2014 approaches.”
